A word about washing…

Friday, June 01, 2012

Hola and happy June! Where has the time gone? In less than two weeks, we will be back in the U.S. beginning to plan our next adventure!

We posted last night before dinner, but we had such a nice time that I wanted to write about it. When we were ready to go out, we headed downstairs and ran into the daughter of the house, a lovely gal in her early 30’s I’d guess. She also speaks very little English (which is really a trend around here, that’s for sure!) but we asked her 1) where could we get laundry done, and 2) Pizza?! She told us for laundry that we could go to the Carrefour (big shopping center chain in Europe) in the neighboring town of Torrelavega, and we think she indicated we could do it ourselves…more later on that. For pizza, she first started to draw us a map, and then shrugged her shoulder, picked up her keys, and gestured that we were to follow her! How nice! It really took about 1½ - 2 minutes, and we were magically in the town center, where she pointed out the pizza place, seafood place, etc. Parking was easy, and we went into the little “cafeteria” that she pointed to. Well…an American-style cafeteria it wasn’t – but a really nice, bright, clean cafĂ©, it was! We sat on high chairs (which I love doing, and R hates…) and ordered one pizza Marguerite with coke for me, and sparkling water for the two of us. The pizza came, and it had ham on it along with the cheese (which isn’t the traditional pizza marguerite) and we were handed the pizza cutter! Unlike some European countries, where you get large individual size pizzas, this one pizza was just perfect for the two of us – we ate it up, and it was delicious! And we got out of there when the sun was still shining!

Decided to take a drive down to the lighthouse and beach; came up over a hill, and wow – ocean spread out in front of us! Suances has a lot of hotels and apartments, so we’re thinking that many Spaniards and French probably come here. As we haven’t heard any English in the last week, and nobody seems to speak it, we’re thinking that this part of Spain is fair to partly undiscovered by most Brits and Americans! Don’t know why, as it is SO incredibly beautiful here! Everything you could want – ocean, beautiful beaches, huge mountain ranges, great roads – Northern Spain really has it all – including decorated caves! Wow!! Took some pictures and then headed back, nicely satisfied, to our little Campo for the night!

Up about 6:30-ish; no rush, as breakfast isn’t served until 9 a.m. – which for us, is half the day gone already! However, nice breakfast – breads and cake and toast and good orange juice – and – get ready for it – two pieces of bread with an ANCHOVY on it – one for each of us; how thoughtful! UGH! Needless to say, R had all the anchovies going this morning; I don’t much care for fish, but FURRY fish is WAY beyond my liking!!

Packed up the dirty laundry and our reading books and headed out. Made it to the Carrefour – and, no lavanderia automatic (not sure if those are the correct words, but close enough…). We did find an actual laundry and dry cleaners, and the gal there said there were NO do-it-yourself places in the province! (Not sure I believe that, but there wasn’t too much we could do … so, turned in our clothes to be laundered by professionals, and we’re to pick them up tonight at 7 p.m. hmmm…) As we were already inside the big Carrefour, we decided to take a look around – R still looking for Dial soap (his favorite brand), which (not surprisingly) he has not been able to find here…and ended up spending at least an hour in the store. It’s like a huge Walmart with clothes, electronics, and food, all under one roof. This was when we decided to have a picnic for dinner tonight. R got cherries, we found some good cheese and salami; added bread, and what would be better? As R pointed out, we are not traveling with our knives, so once again, we had to buy one to bring home – unless they take it off of us on the train…grrr… I haven’t looked at the photos yet, but hoping that R captured the true essence of the ham counter! Turns out, you can buy your own personal LEG of ham (or whatever it’s called!) cured in whatever way you like! I found something that looked to my inexperienced eye to be a tennis racquet cover – just a bit odd – only to realize later that it’s a cover for your cured ham! Wow! Wonder how I could get all of that back into the U.S….hmmm…

By this time, it was lunchtime (for us, not the Spanish, who don’t eat lunch until around 2 p.m.) so we ducked into the local McDonalds – yes, again; sorry folks! Sometimes the familiar (and fast) is a good thing!

Finally out into the sunshine again, and decided to take a detour through one of the national parks very close by. Incredibly beautiful place! This time, after driving through a virtual forest of pine trees, you pop out and you’re right at the water and an amazing beach! We walked around for a bit and took some pictures – it is fabulous! Decided then that we’d had enough for the morning, so back to Suances for naps…shhhh…R still asleep!

More later!
