Southern Utah is incredibly beautiful!

Friday, 2 September

Now that we actually have the correct time figured out, we were up and out about 7:30 a.m. for the buffet breakfast served at our terrific restaurant from last night. It wasn’t included in the hotel price, but it was definitely worth the expense – an endless array of fruits, oatmeal, eggs, omelet station, bacon, sausage and breakfast potatoes…a great way to start the day!

On the road about 9, and decided to head back through Zion and out the other side, rather than taking the freeway. Lovely drive – it’s fun to do it in both directions, as the rock formations look so differently. Out to Mt. Carmel and then turned north, on our way to Cedar Breaks. Our friend Marcia Neugebauer had been through there recently, and recommended it highly – and she was definitely right! Lovely drive through the area, and then decided that we would head to Bryce Canyon while we were in the area. Stopped in Panguitch for lunch – hmmm…the Smokehouse Fire Station restaurant on Main Street…I had a pulled pork sandwich; R the beef brisket … and I definitely won! No pictures, as really, they weren’t worth taking! Oh well!

From Panguitch we headed to Bryce Canyon. It was an absolutely incredibly beautiful day – temperatures at altitude in the mid to high 70’s; terrific driving weather; opened all the windows! We deliberately scheduled our trip during this time, in hopes that summer traffic would be down, as most kids have to be back in school – and it was wonderful! We were able to drive the roads in Bryce with no problems at all; lots of close-up parking for all the lookouts. Took lots of pictures; really enjoyed the drive.

Finally, about 3 p.m. we decided to head for our motel du jour – this time, the Best Western in Fillmore, Utah…hmmm…Okay…the motel is fine. Room spotlessly clean; large bathroom; comfy bed. However, Fillmore itself is fair to partly lacking…I think their idea of a gourmet restaurant is Carl’s, Jr. The hotel does have a restaurant associated with it, which is where we ended up…R had fried shrimp and French fries; I had soup (a very good New England Clam Chowder) and salad. Everything fine, just not memorable…think we got spoiled last night!! (and again, no pictures…as R says, not worth wasting the film!)

Tomorrow we are heading east of Delta, UT to go look for fossils! Very excited; just LOVE being out in the heat looking for things on the ground! So…more tomorrow!

Much love,
m
