Two National Parks in one Day!

Monday, 5 September 2011

Happy Labor Day!

Today was our “moving on” day from the city lights of Kemmerer, WY into Yellowstone National Park. We left the motel about 8 a.m. for the really beautiful drive up the Wyoming/Idaho border and into Grand Teton National Park. I had never been through Jackson Hole or the National Park, and it was really exquisitely beautiful! We did have an interesting stop along the way, as a large herd of cattle was taking up the entire road! R got a picture as we finally got past!

Unfortunately there were some fires burning in the area (naturally started fires that were being closely monitored but otherwise left alone by the Park Service) which made it very hazy everywhere – in fact, at one point, we couldn’t see the Grand Tetons at all! Once on the other side of Jackson, we entered Grand Teton NP; lovely! As it was approaching lunch time, we decided to try the Jackson Lake Lodge – and WOW; terrific! The view from the dining room was amazing – and we were seated at a table for two right at the window! And, while R did take pictures of the view and the restaurant, we both forgot to photograph our meals – and they were wonderful! R ordered the buffalo carne asada with a chili relleno and white beans; he loved it! I ordered a chicken sandwich on grilled sour dough, which came with chipotle mayonnaise, onions and tomatoes – so large that I had to eat it open face, but it was terrific! We walked around Jackson Lodge a bit, and it is truly beautiful! We’ve decided that we’re definitely going to have to come back one day and stay there – and eat at the restaurant again!!

On the road again, passing from one national park to another, entering Yellowstone by the south entrance. We didn’t have too far to drive to get to our stopping place for the next several nights – Old Faithful Inn. R wants to wait until there are a bit fewer people in the lobby to take pictures – this is a very popular place! Our room is Old Faithful geyer-side, and simply but comfortably furnished. No WiFi…but it is available across the parking lot, at the new Old Faithful Snow Lodge, so that’s where we’re heading soon! We did walk over there after checking in, and it looks very nice – much newer than the Inn, but still fairly picturesque. Then hit up the new Old Faithful Visitor’s Center, which is very well done; picked up some literature on the park, and from there walked to Old Faithful for its next scheduled show. Fairly on time, and very impressive – I really do love all the thermal activities going on all over the park!

We have a dinner reservation here at 9 p.m. (all other reservation times long gone!) but as we had a large and filling lunch, that’s OK with us! Decided to go for a ride north, towards Madison. We stopped at several of the thermal sections and R took lots and lots of pictures of all sorts of things bubbling! Have to admit that I was a bit disconcerted with the “bear warning” signs, but fortunately – or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it! – no bears spotted yet! We did see bison outside of Jackson Hole, though – so cute and cuddly!

Well, I think that’s about it for today! More in the morning!
